Trade 100K Japanese civilian lives for those of a million invading GIs? You bet your ass. One of the latter might very well have been my dad, if he could have gotten transferred out of Europe after the end of hostilities there.
And I generally like the Japanese. I’ve studied their language and culture. But they deserved every kiloton they got for allowing themselves to be led like sheep by their military leaders into atrocity after atrocity. (Rape of Nanking, anybody? Bataan Death March?) Would that the Emperor had had the balls to call them on it before we had to slag Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
Thank goodness we had a president back then who had the balls to order the slagging.
