Well woot.

Got a call from Gunsmith Bob at Coal Creek Armory today.  He's looked at Dad's 1911 that I finally got around to sending down there late last year, and said that he had to change out the plunger tube.  He said that he'd put 7 rounds through it after that and didn't get any keyholing, but he'd change out the barrel if I wanted.  After we discussed it a bit and he indicated that there were other issues with the weapon (but nothing that would stop it from being usable), I decided to cut my losses and stop there.  I figure that even if it isn't going to be my go-to pistol anymore, I can set it on my desk or on the nightstand with a full mag and still have something that will get me to my shotgun.

So I guess I'm in the market for a new or new-to-me 1911.  I do lust a bit after the Springfield Armory models I looked at after reading Brigid the other day (although I can't afford the "Loaded" model she was talking about; the "Range Officer" is probably more in my price range).  Thoughts?

There's nothing wrong with a standard Colt government model. If you plan to carry it on you, you might want to consider the Colt Commander, which is lighter in weight and a little smaller, but will have somewhat more recoil. There are tons of accessories available for them and you can customize the gun as you can afford it. You might want to take a look at the Kimbers as well. That's presuming you're wanting to stick to a single action. If I was looking for a .45 for personal protection, I'd be looking at a Heckler and Koch or a Kahr.

I can't imagine why anyone would want to carry anything that big and bulky around anymore with so many other good options out there that cost a lot less money, are safer, and pack plenty of punch. But I get the nostalgia thing. :) If I had lots of money, I'd have a very nice .45 all decked out just to have fun with at the range and keep in a drawer at home.
