Larceny of a perfectly good word

At Instapundit, one of the guest bloggers, Elizabeth Price Foley, muses on the difference between liberals and conservatives after her daughter is given by her teacher two misleading definitions to memorize.

The fact of the matter is that the commie progs stole the perfectly good label "liberal" from the real liberals back in the 1950s, because "progressive" had become a dirty word after "progressives" in the 1920's managed to cause the 1930's and the 1940's.

A classical liberal today is what is incorrectly called a "conservative".  The correct definition of a classical liberal is one who believes that people should be as free from government domination as possible.  Or one who believes that government is the people's servant, not the people's master.  To be a liberal in the classic sense is to love and promote liberty.  It does not imply the stick-in-the-muddedness suggested by progressives' condescending use of the word "conservative".

Today's soi-disant "liberals" don't believe any of that.  But they stole a perfectly good word from us and destroyed it for all time.  Kind of like they destroy most things they get their hands on.  The only liberty they're interested in is the liberties they're taking with our lives, our country, and our sacred honor.
