says Instapundit. And he's right.
Except the shooting needs to start at higher levels. Simply taking out punks won't solve the problems in Mordor-on-the-Lake.
And did you see this? Apparently, in Florida, thanks to idiots in the legislature, warning shots are worth 20 years in prison -- even if you have no prior record.
I bow to no one in the understanding painfully inculcated in me from youth that one does not fire a weapon carelessly, and I don't see a whole lot of point in firing warning shots; all that proves to your would-be assailant is that you have a loaded gun and you know how to pull the trigger, not that you've got the nerve to actually shoot them with it.
But at the same time, it's pretty clear that Marissa Alexander thought she was in danger of her life when she pulled the trigger.
The legiscritter who wrote the law says that this result was unintentional. He says that the intent was to ratchet up prison stays for people who were committing felonies with guns. To me it sounds like a typical case of sloppy legislating that places innocent people squarely in the sights of John Law. (How many federal felonies does the average citizen unknowingly commit every day, again?)
If this stupid law is allowed to stand, I'll be damned if I'll spend my retirement in Florida, whether or not my wife inherits her parents' property there. In point of fact I'm not entirely sure I want to go down there later this spring for a few days of vacation.
