So some idiot Pubbie legiscreature from Evansville thinks it's a good idea to fine people for turning our national drinking song Anacreon In Heaven into something other than a straight-forward account of the rockets' red glare etc. No aria for you!
And you have to have what amounts to a license to sing it.
Well, at least it only covers performances at "any event sponsored by public schools and state universities" and "private schools receiving state or local scholarship funds, including vouchers". That's good news, because most of the people I attend such events with can't sing a note anyway. It would be awful if it included the spectators. Or hmm, on the other hand, it might raise quite a bit of money.
The fine for transgressing the vague "performance standards" would be $25, so in other words, it's a perfect target for scofflaw singers. "Sure, I'll sing it my way, and pay $25, no problem."
Seems like what really needs to happen is that somebody needs to get up and put forward a bill that would fine legislators $100,000 and impose a lifetime disqualification from running for any public office in the State of Indiana for filing frivolous bills.
Amen.
I am not sure what is going on at the Statehouse; laws on Class basketball, the Anthem, etc.
I would vote for any politician who said his goal was to eliminate as many laws as possible. We need to change the culture that a successful legislator is one who sponsors bills and spends public money.
What about the 30 day session being reserved for loophole closure and repeal of existing law, with all new legislation being restricted to the 60 day session?
(My thought being that new legislation should have a longer "pick it apart" time, as opposed to "ooh, twice as much time to introduce new legislation!")
Also, I'd love to see this addition to the Indiana Constitution: "Every law, or resolution having the force of law, shall relate to but one subject, and that shall be expressed in the title."
That's one thing the Rebels got right.
