that you might vote for his opponent, Sharon Angle: Nevada Voters Say Reid's Name Checked for Them on Touch-Screen Ballots

The killer graf:

A Clark County voting official said highly sensitive touch-screens may be to blame and that fraud is not the issue.

Hmm. Why are we so fast to handwave potential fraud away? Sounds like a job for the state election commission or the feds, to me, not some county-level sinecure holder.

This makes me think that the whole country should vote like we do here in Indiana. Paper ballots that are electronically counted make the most sense to me. That way there is a way to go back and verify the count after the election is over.

Yeah, sure, but we still don't know if our vote counts or not. There's no receipt. All we can do is watch to see if the ballot counter increases by one. We should get a receipt that states for whom we voted so that we know the ballot was properly read.

Bad idea, skates very close to the old vote-buying scheme: Steal a paper ballot, "properly" mark it, and hand to vote seller. Seller takes to poll, comes back with blank ballot, gets bottle of booze in exchange.

"Receipts" would make it easier; no need to steal a ballot to begin with.

Well then some kind of visual confirmation that the votes were actually counted the way we intended them to be. I don't care if it's a paper receipt or if it's a display on a screen. All I know when I feed my ballot into that voting machine is that it increases the number of ballots accepted by one. It could be shredding the ballot inside there for all I know.
