And the moving finger, having writ, writes smaller than ever.

The Gannett Star on my doorstep was a lot smaller today than I was expecting.

The president and publisher tries to explain why, and what they're doing to try to stop the bleeding.

Sorry, but that dog don't hunt.

We are committed to delivering strong value for our readers and our advertisers. That means we have to try to realistically change and improve at the same time.

I don't think you understand that downsizing the paper doesn't mesh well with change and improvement. But you're a journalist, I guess, not a businessman. Maybe John Ketzenberger can explain it to you.

That's why we'll continue to invest in new products and technologies this year for print and online.

I'm sorry to say that you need to do a hell of a lot better online before I'll bother doing more than going to the site to search obituaries or find the URL for a story I read in the print edition. "More on this story online" is a reader killer. Ask my mother.

That's why our digital content and applications will be enhanced.

Uh huh. Stop using Windows for a web platform, that will be a first big help.

That's why we're going to continue to evolve to meet 21st-century generational expectations while appealing to baby boomers as well.

But in the process, you'll discover you won't appeal to either.

We still will be the most credible source of community news and information across all media platforms.

Sorry, Mr. Kane, but the Gannett Star lost credibility with me way back. You have little or no in-depth coverage of local issues, your national and international news is almost all pulled straight off the wire, you pose yourselves as adversarial crusading journalists against the mayor and the governor, you pride yourselves as being the best newspaper in the state when you have no competition. In a word: Bullshit.

And God forbid the sports section should ever have to share newsprint real estate with, say, the metro/state news or the business section. No, the sports section is going to be sacrosanct. Wouldn't want to piss off all those Colts fans.

What we're going through isn't easy, but it is a great opportunity to reinvent ourselves.

What you're going through is isn't just not easy, it's probably not reversible. That's how bad you are as a newspaper.

On the other hand, you do provide a good, relatively cheap source of cat box liner. So thanks for that, Mr. Kane!

Maybe if people believed The Star was offering accurate unbiased reporting they would be willing to buy the paper.

The Star is like my local paper anymor, nothing but Ap and wire service reports. I can read those in real time on the internet. Why pay 75 cents for old news?
