They told me that when Barack Obama became president, our civil liberties would be trampled on.

Report: Web Sites Could Be Given Film-Style Ratings

Britain’s Culture Secretary Andy Burnham says he is pushing for new standards of decency to be applied to the Web and says giving film-style ratings to individual Web sites is a possibility, London’s Daily Telegraph reports.

Describing the Internet as a ‘quite a dangerous place,’ Burnham told the Daily Telegraph he is planning to negotiate with President-elect Obama’s incoming administration to draw up new international rules for English language Web sites.

Those could include the possibility of introducing age ratings for Web sites.

Yep, looks like the government poking its nose places where it doesn't belong.

God damn it, I don't WANT the government to be my fucking nanny. Fuck off.

This site rated R for REVOLUTION NOW.

...or p for pissed off.

Perhaps one could remind Secretary Burnham that in the US, movie ratings are voluntary, administered by the movie industry, and not overseen or managed by the US government. Note the plethora of DVD sales in stores and online marked "unrated" - the rating applies only to theatre performance, and is interepreted differently by different theatre operators.

In my small town in northern Oklahoma, one theater company requires parent or guardian to accompany those 17 and younger into "R" rated movies. The other allows a guardian or parent to purchase tickets for those 16 and younger - and drop the kiddies off till after the show.

Net Nanny, ICRA (http://www.icra.org/ratingsv02.html), and others have proposed, and to some extent been adopted, over the years. Those interested in avoiding crap learn quickly to avoid the crap.

Unfortunately, politicians still chase power by inventing evils and enemies.

Perhaps I could label my own web site "SBFZ" - Secretary Burnaham Free Zone. Or even "unlabeled".
