Good. Space is for professionals right now, not for tourists who think their money can buy them whatever they want.
And that goes for members of Congress, too.

Well, I hope all my reader (I sometimes suspect that’s not a typo) had an enjoyable Labor Day weekend.
Mine was going just fine till about noon Saturday, when I threw my back out moving furniture at my Mom’s.
The good news is that I can walk today, after a fashion, although more like an evolving biped than an evolved one. Sitting up is agony but after being off two days because I couldn’t read (waiting for my bifocals) and then being off a couple of days sick right after that, I can’t really take any more time off without being shot 🙂 And I can’t take the laptop to bed because sitting up there is even worse. I think Sally has a beanbag chair in storage, and I’m thinking that might be comfortable. We’ll see.
Bloggage will probably be limited but I’ll try to come up with some good stuff for you. FWIW Best of the Web (linked in my Links area to the right) should be back today. (It isn’t so far but the day is young.)

The intent is for this to be a quiet weekend, so unless W. surprises us all and blows Baghdad or Riyadh off the map, there probably won’t be any bloggage from this quarter until Tuesday. Have a good one.

Here, Rachel, is one theory you can use to decide why UTA is so screwed up. Along with every other university in the country.
Those who can, graduate and do. Those who can’t, find university sinecures and teach.

And owners and players will continue to be overpaid snotnoses. Owners will continue to try to make as much money as they can on the backs of the fans, and players will continue to make stupid statements to the effect of “gee, my working life is only 10 years while everyone else’s is 30 years or more, so I deserve to make millions of dollars a year so I won’t be poor when I have to retire at 35.” My heart bleeds.
No baseball player today is worth a million dollars a year. Flat out. Not a single pitcher, slugger, or any other player. If your playing life is 10 years, that’s 10 million dollars. If you can’t live the rest of your life on a cool 10 mil, you’re either a moron or you can’t get good financial advice. Either way you deserve to be relegated to selling used cars or insurance when you retire if you can’t make 10 million dollars last a lifetime.
But the game will survive. I suppose. If the owners don’t jack ticket prices any farther into the stratosphere.

…but ripping Lisa Beamer is going over the edge. (I’m secretly in love with Lisa Beamer. Well, maybe not so secretly…my wife knows about it so I guess I’m safe.)

This Jane magazine is pretty much in love with itself. Its “contact the writers” area appears to be named “Aren’t we great?”. I would be inclined to say, “No.” On the other hand, their “looking for writers” area is titled “Jane needs help”. I would be inclined to agree.
My God. There are actually men working for this magazine. And people pay money for it? Gaah.

The Secretary of State’s Office is accusing two Columbus businessmen of bilking investors out of $5 million — and state officials want the money returned.
The Securities Division, which investigated this fraud case, also wants Don and Mark Pratt to pay what could amount to millions of dollars in civil penalties.
The Columbus father and son are accused of selling fake promissory notes to as many as 50 investors. They allegedly ran a Ponzi scheme, in which money from the sale of notes is used to pay interest on notes that already had been sold.

and Social Security? Well, I wonder if SSA can be construed as “neighbors and friends”…

“They scammed their neighbors and friends,” said Secretary of State Sue Anne Gilroy on Wednesday. “We’re doing everything we can to pursue this and aggressively seek justice.”

I wonder if Sue Anne would be willing indict the SSA, too, while she’s at it?
