but it’s a start.
KABUL, Afghanistan – A draft of Afghanistan’s proposed constitution declares the country a Muslim state but does not impose Islamic Shariah (search) law – the topic of heated debate, an official said Sunday….
The document’s preamble declares, “Afghanistan is an Islamic state” and says its laws must be in accordance with Islam, but it stops short of imposing Shariah, the official said.
The problem is that a constitution for a modern nation shouldn’t make that kind of statement. While the US Constitution invokes the blessing of God, it doesn’t make a declaration that the United States is a Christian nation.
To make the overt statement just holds the door open for sharia law to be imposed whenever the government wants to do so. They can very easily point to this statement in future years and piously declaim that it was clear that the Founders’ intent was to allow sharia law to be the law of the land.
This is a bad move. But it’s better than imposing sharia from the beginning.
