What a wonderful smell you’ve discovered.

Well, there is a four-foot-deep hole in my front yard and they’ve reached the wye connector…and found that the sewer pipe is clay, and NOT Orangeburg.  So yay us.  I told the guys that I’d be willing to bet that my Dad told them “No Orangeburg!” when they built the house…and he would have known all about it, being a chemical engineer.  One thing I do know about this house is that all of the 2×4 and 2×3 lumber that was used in it was of decent quality…because Dad would come out here and kick all of the crappy twisted/split ones out and make them replace them.

Sadly, Mom and Dad didn’t opt to spend the extra $1K for brick veneer, so we got Masonite siding instead.  Yeah, another junk building product that someone should have been sued over.  Anyway, I asked once why they didn’t splurge on that, because they only paid $16,500 for the house.  Dad said, “Well, you have to remember that I was only bringing home about $65 a week back then.  Another thousand dollars would have made the mortgage payment more than we could have afforded.”

Times do change.
