Uncanny

For some odd reason I’m listening to Genesis this morning. From Duke, the lyrics to “Duchess”, suitably modified with a male protagonist instead of female, are clearly a prophecy of the rise, fall, and ultimate cratering of The Won:

Times were good,
He never thought about the future, he just did what he would
But he really cared
About his music, it all seemed so important then,
And he dreamed that every time he performed
Everyone would cry for more,
That all he had to do was step into the light,
And everyone would start to roar.
And on the road,
Where all but a few fall by the wayside on the grassier verge,
He battled through
Against the others in his world, and the sleep, and the odds.
But now everytime that he performed
Everybody cried for more,
Soon all he had to do was step into the light,
For everyone to start to roar.
And all the people cried, you’re the one we’ve waited for.
But time went by
It wasn’t so easy now, all uphill, and not feeling so strong.
Yes times were hard,
Too much thinking ’bout the future and what people might want.
And then there was the time that he performed
When nobody called for more
And soon everytime he stepped into the light,
They really let him know the score.
But he dreamed of the times when he sang his songs
And everybody cried for more,
When all he had to do was step into the light
For everyone to start to roar.
And all the people cried, you’re the one we’ve waited for.

Uncanny. It’s as if they knew.
