We’re planning to take the City of New Orleans from Chicago to (obviously) New Orleans later this month. Rather than park in Chicago at overpriced Daley, er, daily rates, we’re thinking about parking at the Gary airport and taking the South Shore into Chicago from the station there.
Does that make sense or are we entirely out of our minds?

A friend of mine was working on an IT project for the state of Indiana. He and his coworkers couldn’t find an ATM machine. So they asked a police officer where the closest ATM machine was. He told them it was in Merrillville, and that if they had found one in Gary, they would have been robbed.
Having heard this story, I’m not likely to ever visit Gary, forget leaving my car there unattended.
Not Gary. Gary Airport. Different animal.
I would think you’d be better off picking up the City of New Orleans in Champaign-Urbana, or taking the Hoosier State to Chicago, or taking a bus to Chicago. OK, I’m not so sure about the bus, but you get the idea.
It leaves Chicago at 8PM. I didn’t feel like sitting around ChamBana all night waiting for it to get there. I’ve been there. Never really wanted to go back 🙂
The Hoosier State takes FIVE HOURS to get to Chicago.
On the other hand…hmmm…that’s probably what it would take to drive up there and futz around parking and getting on the South Shore.
Probably not a bad alternative.
