I’ve been working on a friend’s Toshiba laptop for over 24h now and it STILL hasn’t downloaded all of the Windows Update fixes.
Of course, I think the last time this thing was even connected was over a year ago. In fact I wouldn’t be surprised if it was over two years ago. The battery was completely flat. Complicating this is the fact that the machine has only 512M RAM and a sub-gigahertz Core Duo processor.
I’ve finally gotten to XP SP3. I’m sure there are more fixes. And I haven’t even updated Office yet.

  1. FWIW, both my laptops have been Toshibas, and they both worked/work great. The original lasted 4.5 years before it finally bluescreened, and endured just about everything short of being drop-kicked into a brick wall. I expect the current model will have a similar record.

  2. I had a Toshiba in 2000 that turned me off the brand forever. The three I’ve had since (four if you count the one I got Sally) were all Dells, with nary a problem.
But the brand isn’t really the problem, and I didn’t really mean to imply that it was; it’s just an old underpowered laptop that needs upgrading. Supposedly it was certified for Vista. Funny, but I can’t imagine running Vista on this thing 🙂

  3. I have a Toshiba laptop belonging to my employer that sits in a closet. When last I used it, I had to hook it up to an external monitor. I have an old IBM ThinkPad that is at least two years older, and it works better. Its only problem is that the battery is dead, and not worth replacing. Otherwise, it works fine.
Plus the Toshiba needs a Windows reinstall, and to do that I’d have to make a restore CD set which requires a ridiculous number of CD-R disks.
The expense of 10 CD-Rs isn’t the issue. It’s the time involved. The machine wouldn’t be worth that investment in time if the display were working.
I don’t know what I’d buy if I needed another laptop. If IBM hadn’t sold their PC division to Lenovo, I’d buy another ThinkPad. I certainly wouldn’t buy a Toshiba.
