Just spent a couple of fruitful hours out at Eagle Creek range with Tam and Bobbi and Kirk and a couple of other folks whose names have flown out of my mind — for which I apologize! Names and I don’t get along on the first date very often. (Hell, I called Sally “Sandy” three times after we got engaged…)
Shot up about 150 rounds of .45ACP and rediscovered why I love the 1911. I am not a great shot but I have three pieces of paper that show I could at least hit the paper. (And there were at least two bullseyes, which was gratifying.) I have trouble with the sights, though; I may have to get some different glasses for shooting, the bifocals seem to play hell with my sighting.
Then I brought in the Winchester Model 24. Kirk spent some time showing Bobbi how to shoot it, but Bobbi demurred from taking her own shot — and I think rightly so! Nobody with a history of a separated shoulder ought to be firing that monster.
And I should have taken my own advice. I shot it three times — twice with Kirk’s bird shot loads, and then once with my own #6 Super-X, and my right shoulder feels like an elephant kicked it. I’d forgotten how much recoil that bad boy has. I think until I find out what’s actually wrong with my shoulder (bursitis or rotator cuff, or whatever), I’ll lay off the Model 24. I would have shot the .410 today but I realized at the last minute that I didn’t have any shells for it (and then remembered my dad telling me about ten years ago that he’d taken it out on a lark and shot up my shells). Was sorry Og (the King of Recoil) wasn’t there; he would have loved the Model 24.
Shot some very cool .22 Rugers that belonged to Kirk and Bobbi. Also shot Bobbi’s .38 Ruger, which is a sweet gun with lots of bang behind it.
I’m going to try to make the Blogmeet at 3PM but as I told Tam on the way out, I’m not sure if I’ll be able to make it or not. We’re taking my Mom out to dinner tonight and we have a lot of crap to do around the house. If I don’t see you all this month, I’ll see ya next month.

What is it that makes the 24 so recoil-ey? I have a couple very light single shot 12 gauges and I’ve shot them many times with magnum loads, I never considered the recoil an issue. 12 gauge is a pretty tame recoil compared to one of the bigger bore rifles. I wish I could have beenthere, I really do. Bigger fish were a ‘frying.
