U.S. Probes Whether China Copied Laptop Data During Commerce Secretary’s Visit
The moron actually left his computer unattended. What a maroon. So this may or may not have led to three separate attempts to break into Commerce’s servers in Washington.
Interesting to note:
The Commerce Department break-ins have been so serious that its Bureau of Industry and Security, which regulates exports of sensitive technology that might be used in weapons, effectively unplugged itself from the Internet.
Workers were instructed to use a few laptops placed around the office that are isolated from the department’s network, even to search for public information using Google’s Web search engine.
Well, fucking duh. EVERY sensitive government computer should be isolated from the Internet. If a civil servant needs public information from the Internet to do his job, he should have to go to a shared research workstation with no connection to the secure, isolated network and print off whatever he needs.
Or if he needs to have the Internet at his desk, his computer should have no access to the secure, isolated network. He should have to go to a separate computer connected to that network.
And NO SNEAKERNET. Damn it.
Maybe this would make government departments a little less efficient (*snork*…holding back laughter), but it would be worth it to put a stop to this shit.
