So long, CompUSA

I can’t exactly be sad about this, except that they were damn near the only place in town that I could find parts I needed in a hurry without having to drive clear out to Fry. Otherwise I found them overpriced, unhelpful, and I will never forget the time (in 2000) when they lost the power supply to my brand-new laptop that had fried itself and had to be sent back on warranty service. They told me to be sure to bring the power supply when I brought the computer in, and I did, and when it came back…no power supply, and they were going to let me walk out with it that way! In the event, I got one, but it took 45 minutes with me getting angrier by the minute (and not exactly holding back how I felt about them) and eventually they had to steal one off of a display model, still warm when they handed it to me. They never got fully off my shit list after that, and I never bought anything expensive there again, either.
As far as Fry is concerned, getting to the Indy store is a major pain in the ass. It’s stuck way back in a commercial park off of one of the worst interchanges on I-69 (at 96th Street — coming north, you turn right on 96th, and then immediately have to cross five lanes of traffic to get into the left turn lane before the light that’s about an eighth of a mile east). On top of that, it really pisses me off that they don’t take American Express. And making matters even worse — why don’t any of these fuckers take a chance on building a store on the northWEST side of town? Get out of that God-awful Castleton area and make it easy on your customers. Sheesh.
I guess I’ll be buying a lot more from NewEgg and just having to wait for it to ship.

  1. Yeah, you’d better duck.
I’ll show you. I’m just going to pull my Alpha out of the closet and get OpenVMS running again.
    🙂
Oh, and the Fashion Mall is a perfect place for an Apple Store. All the fashionistas can now be macistas, and vice versa.
