Mark Steyn follows up on a post from a couple of weeks ago in the NY Sun regarding two young Oregon schoolboys who were persecuted by local law enforcement for participating in the local student custom of…er…”Butt-Swat Friday”. He says,
I concluded my original column on the subject as follows:
The law is an ass, wrote Dickens, and so it seems. A world that requires handcuffs and judges and district attorneys for what took place that Friday in February is not just a failed education system but an entire society that’s losing any sense of proportion.
To require law enforcement to police every routine area of social interaction is to render civilized life impossible and to make more and more citizens the arbitrary victims of a kind of Totalitarianism Lite.
What struck me as I read this is that the very people who condone this sort of crap in our schools are by and large the very same people who accuse the Bush Administration of trying to take away our civil rights.
Sad.
