Sears comes through! Got my parts. Primarily I needed a cable for the self-propel feature.
Two irritations, though.
1) What actually broke was the spring at the end of the cable that pulls the idler arm over to engage the belt. OK, easy, replace the spring, for like 3 or 4 bucks. Right?
Wrong.
You have to order the entire cable assembly (Sears part #196002 for anyone who cares) for $25.67. Plus shipping. Which, because I actually wanted it this week, had to be expedited, for another $22.97.
And you have to order the entire cable assembly because the cable actually passes through the one end of the spring and has a ball on the end of it to keep from pulling out. Obviously, since this ball is bigger than the hole in the end of the spring, you can’t pull the cable out of it and just put another spring on.
Maybe this makes the thing last longer. I dunno. We’ve only had the mower three years and the damn spring broke. I hope the new one lasts longer than three years.
2) The cable is held onto the handle assembly with a couple of nylon wire ties, along with the wiring harness for the electric starter. That’s OK — but why the FUCK didn’t you ship me a couple of new wire ties to replace the ones I’m going to have to cut off to remove the old cable?
Oh well. Time to head out to the shed and dig out some of Dad’s old wire ties, I guess. And now the mower will run, yay.

The spring sort of “screws” on. You press the spring onto the cable and turn anticlockwise until the wire comes through the end, and then clockwise until the spring is on. Much easier than it sounds.
Well, as it turns out, they don’t sell the spring separately anyway — just the fully-assembled cable.
