News Flash: Star wrong again

I just got around to reading the editorial from this morning’s Gannett Star regarding the election. I immediately noticed two things they had wrong.
First, they did have a subhead that said “Ballard free of political ties”, but followed it immediately with a sentence that said “Greg Ballard will owe few political debts when he assumes office as mayor.” Mr. Ryerson et al., Greg Ballard doesn’t owe anybody ANYTHING. Nobody believed in him but the people. Nobody got on a bandwagon with him (with the sole exception of Kent Smith, and I think the coattails by that time were Ballard’s). If anybody owes anybody, the Marion County Republican Party owes him the choice of their next chairman.
Second, while admitting that not owing political debts is good because it means Ballard can put professionals into city offices instead of party hacks, the Star continues to play the inexperience card: “He even should consider keeping on, at least early in his administration, a few of Mayor Bart Peterson’s best officials. Ballard is inexperienced in running a government; seasoned managers could help as he digs into the details of governing.”
Well, in a word: Bullshit. What Ballard needs to do is institute a “scorched earth” policy when it comes to Peterson’s appointed hacks, none of whom he’ll be able to trust with his back turned. And the Star needs to remember that Bart Peterson was also inexperienced eight years ago when he was elected mayor. Did the Star recommend then that Peterson keep on some of Steve Goldsmith’s best officials? Somehow I doubt it.
How about this as a compromise: The Star shuts the fuck up about inexperience from here on out, at least as far as Greg Ballard is concerned, and Greg Ballard doesn’t say anything about what a bunch of completely worthless REMFs the staff of the Star are.
Otherwise, Ballard should completely ignore the Star. After all, he doesn’t owe them anything, either.
