Damn.

A friend and co-worker of mine who attends VT at Blacksburg as a part-time graduate student is just fine…but his French teacher was apparently one of the victims. [UPDATE, 4/18: Apparently a friend of his was also killed.]
I’m afraid this guy has it absolutely right. Until VT is forced to lift its weapons ban, nobody there is going to feel completely safe anymore. (H/T Instapundit.)
I hope IU and Purdue are listening. Josh Claybourn at In the Agora says, “Regarding IU, the school does allow individuals to carry firearms so long as they have obtained ‘prior written authorization from the campus police chief to possess a firearm on campus.’ I believe that one of my law professors had done just that and was known for carrying a concealed weapon.”
Purdue apparently has a similar policy, although it’s difficult to find in its labyrinthine maze of university regulations.
The fact is that they should NOT have these regulations at all. State universities, as arms of the State, should not be allowed to monkey with 2nd Amendment rights, and a CCW should be all the permission anyone needs to carry on a state university campus. The law should always trump university regulations.
