One of the referrers in my log today was from a search asking what the meaning of “Foggy Bottom” was in US politics.
It’s the name of the part of Washington DC that the US State Department resides in at this period in history. The State Department is thus sometimes referred to as “Foggy Bottom”. It’s actually fairly (if accidentally) apt, except that it ought to be “Foggy Brain”.
The State Department used to be in what was known colloquially as “Old State” and is now called the Executive Office Building, across from the White House. It is a singular building from the standpoint of architecture. Many consider it to be the ugliest Federal building in Washington. I think New State (Foggy Bottom) was built in John Foster Dulles’ time as SecState.
