I guess Sally and I are civilized, and we have civilized friends and family. Nothing even remotely comparable to the things discussed in this article happened at our wedding.
People (as I think I’ve mentioned) are sick.
(I must add that, although I did nearly slug one of my wife’s mother’s friends who was trying to keep me away from the restroom before the wedding because she was afraid I was going to see Sally before the ceremony, I managed to restrain myself. Besides, it would have been justifiable homicide; I really had to take a leak.
As it turned out she simply wasn’t aware that that silly superstition isn’t held by Jews. In fact, it’s required that the groom and bride see each other before the ceremony. The groom has to lift the bride’s veil and make sure she’s the woman he’s contracting to marry (see the story of Jacob, Rachel and Leah in Genesis for the reason why) before the ketubah is signed. So in the end, no mayhem took place on our wedding day 🙂
I wouldn’t carry a gun in the synagogue anyway.)
