The Gallup Poll said it, it must be true. Read the whole thing, but here are some highlights:

(…) Most Americans are against prohibiting smoking in all public places, although a third favor this. Only 16%, however, would make smoking totally illegal. . . .

Very few Americans, just 16%, would put smoking on par with illicit drugs, making it totally illegal in the United States. Smokers and nonsmokers share this sentiment almost equally.
