James Lileks bleats today about "[s]ubstandard handle adhesive and thin stock that rips easily" on the paper bags at his local grocery chain.
But fixing these problems is clearly the wrong solution. The Rainbow chain should do what Marsh has done -- and simply make the fucking bags 25% smaller so they hold less.
Yes, campers, that's exactly what Marsh has done. There was nothing wrong with their old paper bags. I'm sure this was yet another cost-cutting measure by the possibly increasingly-desperate equity firm that now owns Marsh and is about to open one of the most ridiculous and possibly most expensive grocery store buildings I've ever seen (a Marsh Fresh Market) at 54th and College. Park on the roof, customers!
If Kroger wasn't twice as far away from the house, we'd probably never shop at Marsh. Even though neither of us particularly likes the Kroger store we have up here. Kroger has things in stock every day that Marsh only dreams they have the shelf space for. But Kroger is so damn proletarian (and they're union, too, even the bag boys, so nobody gives a damn). Eesh. Give me a Publix. Please.
