Stern wants to tighten players' gun restrictionsNBA commissioner David Stern said Wednesday he wants to "eliminate guns from the NBA" and challenged the players' association to enter talks on what he called "an alarming subject."
"My suggestion is that you get full input from the union," Stern said during his annual tipoff conference call with reporters. "But we think this is an alarming subject. And though you'll read about players saying they feel safer with guns, in fact, those guns make them less safe. It's a proven issue."
I hope the NRA takes him to task on this, because it's NOT a proven issue. The only reason guns make NBA players less safe is because a few NBA players are thugs. While I'm sure there are plenty of responsible NBA players who carry guns responsibly, Stephen Jackson is not one of them, and restricting the 2nd Amendment rights of all NBA players because of a few bad apples doesn't seem reasonable to me.
But then I imagine David Stern has never heard of the 2nd Amendment in his little high-and-mighty ivory tower fiefdom.
"I would favor being able to have a firearm to protect your home. Period," Stern said. "I don't think it's necessary to walk the streets with a gun. . . . It's a pretty widely accepted stat that if you carry a gun, your chances of being shot by one increase dramatically."
Actually I don't think that is a valid stat at all, although I imagine it is "widely accepted". It sounds like a liberal gun-control myth/talking point.
Perhaps we should say that if you are a criminal and you carry a gun and you try to use it in the commission of a crime in a right-to-carry jurisdiction, your chances of being shot by a gun increase dramatically. And I would argue that that is a good thing.
